2012 January 1, 2012 - Resolution Run 5K - Rattlesnake Valley, Missoula, MT. Sue: 28:40. Brad: 40:45. Course was short by two-tenths of a mile. Either uphill or downhill all the way. Cloudy, cold, very icy for the first mile. Good turnout and warm soup at the Rattlesnake School at the end. 2011 December 31, 2011 - Two Mile Estimated Time Race, Peak Health & Fitness Center, Missoula, MT (indoor one-eighth mile track). Sue: 19:03 (est. 20:00); Brad 24:38 (est. 29:00). RunWildMissoula end of year race at our health club. December 16, 2011 - Light the Way 5K, Missoula, MT. No times. We ran in Greenough Park in the dark, 3 loops. Icy, dark, and cold, so we ran together and took it easy. November 6, 2011 - Hoofin' It for Hunger 5K, Missoula, MT. Sue: 26:42; Brad: 40:36. Sunny, cold. Run around Missoula's industrial park to benefit the Montana Foodbank. October 1, 2011 - Homecoming Hustle 5K, Missoula, MT. Sue: 27:20; Brad: 40:03. Run is just before the University of Montana Homecoming Parade through downtown, along the parade route, around the inside of the football stadium. Sunny and warm this year. September 18, 2011 - I Run for Bob 5K, Frenchtown, MT. Sue: 28:40; Brad: 42:30. Nice run on the golf course up in Frenchtown. August 27, 2011 - Bitterroot Classic Triathlon, Hamilton, MT. 750 yd. swim, 13.1 mi. bike, 3.1 mi. run. Sue: S - 15:32; T1 + B - 53:36; T2 + R - 35:00; O - 1:44:08. Brad: S - 16:53; T1 + B - 44:49; T2 + R - 1:45:58. Sunny, record hot day for this summer (96 degrees). Our wave started at 12:05, and we got to enjoy the heat. July 31, 2011 - Bozeman Tritons Spring Triathlon, Bozeman, MT. 4800 ft. above sea level. 750 yard swim (was longer than that), 13.1 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad: S - 25:41, T-1 - 1:08, B - 48:09, T-2 - 1:31, R - 43:50, O - 2:00:19. 126th of 136 overall, 2nd of 2 M75-79. Weather was sunny and hot. Disappointing result - mystified by slow swim. Hilly bike. Slow run. Must be tired from too much racing. #206 July 24, 2011 - Race the River Triathlon, Coeur d'Alene, ID. 2000 ft. above sea level. 800 yard open water swim, 11 mile bike, run 3.1 miles. Brad: S and run to transition - 17:29; T-1 - 2:21; B - 36:06; T-2 - 1:22; R - 39:58, O - 1:37:26. 551st of 678 overall, 2nd of 3 M70+ (1st M75-79). Long run from swim to transition. Bike course was three loops and somewhat congested. Great weather again. Well-managed race. Pacific Northwest Regional Championship. #205 July 16, 2011 - Santa Fe Triathlon, Santa Fe, NM. 7,000 ft. above sea level. Swim 400 meters, bike 11 miles, run 3.2 miles. Brad: R - 41:59, B + T-1 + T-2 - 49:44, S - 12:42, O - 1:44:25. 1st 75-79. Son, Arne: R - 20:40, B + T-1 + T-2 - 37:54, S - 9:24, O - 1:07:58, 3rd 45-49, 18th overall among men. Run was first and (pool) swim was last. Long transition, up hill from run. Bike was uphill going out into headwind, downhill coming back. Great weather. About 285 in triathlon. Fun to do the race with son! #204 July 10, 2011 - Spring Meadows Triathlon, Helena, MT. 4500 ft above sea level. 800 yard open water swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad: S - 22:38, T-1 - 2:12, Bike - 43:14, T-2 - 1:33, R - 41:24, O - 1:51:01. 1st 70+. Sue did the Missoula Half Marathon - 2:13:13. #203 June 4, 2011 - Y-Triathlon, Missoula, MT. 500 yard pool swim, 5 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad: S - 10:40; B + T-1 - 17:09; R + T-2 - 43:01; O - 1:10:50. 1st 60+. Cool, clear day, great racing weather. #202 May 1, 2011 - Lilac Bloomsday 12k, Spokane, WA. Sue 1:08:11, 12th F60-64, 5,958th of 51,303 finishers. Sue just missed the 68 minute cut-off for elite classification. Brad 1:41:06, 27th of 125 M75-79, 20,614th of 51,303 overall. Cool, clear day, great running weather April 23, 2011 - Grizzly Triathlon, Missoula. 1000 yard pool swim, 20k bike, 5k run (with a hill). Sue S - 21:31, T1+B+T2 - 66:09, R - 31:50 = 1:59:15. Brad S-22:22, T1+B+T2 - 48:02, R - 44:51 = 1:55:16. Snowed the day before, 22 degrees the morning of, Sue had disadvantage of early start at 8:30; Brad started at 10:30. Brad slowed by swim interference, running injury. But it's good to have the season underway! #201. April 16, 2011 - Superfun(d) Run, 5k, Milltown. Brad 41:45, a little slower each run! Sue ran 10k, time 55:56. April 2, 2011 - Run for the Trees 5k, Missoula. Brad 41:34. March 19, 2011 - Wheat Montana 5k, Missoula. Another cloudy, damp winter day. Brad 41:27. March 12-13, 2011 - Alpine ski racing, Lookout Pass, ID-MT border. 1 GS, 1 Slalom. Brad 2nd in GS, 1st in SL. Again, practice would help! February 23-26, 2011 - Alpine ski racing, Schweitzer, Sand Point, ID. 3 Super G's, 2nd 75-79 in each, 1 GS, 2nd 75-79. Practice would help! January 29, 2011 - Frost Fever 5k, Missoula. Brad 38:35. Cloudy, cold, and slushy, but nice to run outdoors for a change. 2010 September 11, 2010 - International Triathlon Union Sprint Triathlon World Championship, Budapest, Hungary. 750 meter open water swim, 20k bike, 5k run. Brad: S: 20:47, T1: 5:45, B: 41:27, T2: 5:48, R: 43:44, total 1:57:09, 6th of 8 in age group. It rained, heavy at times, during race and two days before. Water for swim was 14 degrees C, and transition area, 250 m. long, was a sea of spongy grass and mud. Cautious on bike due to huge puddles and tight corners. Very scenic course along Danube River. A little hypothermic on bike and run, but survived. Triathlon #200. August 28, 2010 - Bitterroot Classic Triathlon, Hamilton, MT. 750 yard pool swim, 20k bike, 5k run. Brad: S: 14:58, T1 + Bike: 44:17; T2 + Run: 41:35, total time: 1:40:52. 163rd of 225 overall (115th swim, 95th bike, 212th run). Cloudy, cool day with moderate north wind. Off target times in bike and run. Head wind on bike, smoke in air from forest fires, forgot to wear GPS watch to track speed and time. Won raffle. Great triathlon! #199. August 7, 2010 - Emmett's Most Excellent Sprint Triathlon, Emmett, Idaho. 600? m. swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad: S: 17:12, T1: 3:10, B: 45:32; T2: 1:42; R: 42:55, overall 1:50:16. Way off target times -- just couldn't get going. Got dusted by 84-year-old Frank French and 78-year-old Jim Gaughran. Beautiful day, well-organized tri. #198. July 31, 2010 - Ellensburg Sprint Triathlon, Ellensburg, WA. 500 yd. swim, 13.7 mile bike, 2.7 mile run. Brad: S: 11:38 (131 of 160), T1: 1:20; B: 48:05 (53 of 160); T2: 1:19; R: 33:34 (143 of 160); overall 1:36:06 (106 of 160), 1st (and only) 70+. Another beautiful day. More climb on bike than I had anticipated. #197. July 12, 2010 - Missoula Half Marathon, Missoula, MT. 13.1 miles. Sue - 2:07:13, 3rd of 46 60-64, 942 of 2362 overall. Brad - 3:06:16, 5th of 8 70+ (1st 75-79, oldest in race), 2035 of 2362 overall. Beautiful day for a run! May 22, 2010 - Peak Sprint Triathlon, Missoula, MT. 500 yd. pool swim, 12.4 mi. bike, 3.1 mi. run. Brad S: 10:43, B+T1: 48:07; R+T2: 44:12, Total: 1:43:01. 79 of 88 males. 159 of 189 overall. Weather was cloudy, cool, and threatening, but no showers during my race. #196. May 8, 2010 - YMCA Sprint Triathlon, Missoula, MT. 500 yd. pool swim, 5 mi. bike, 3.1 mi. run. Brad: S: 10:27, T1+B+T2: 19:37; R: 38:31; Total: 1:08:31. Weather was cool and windy, showers developed late in race, so had to dress for bike and run, slowing transition. #195 May 3, 2010 - Bloomsday Race, Spokane, WA. 12 kilometers with hills. Sue: 1:35:34; 18,308th of 50,661 finishers. Brad: 1:38:51; 22nd of 109, M75-79; 19,522nd of 50,661 finishers. Sunny and cool, a bit windy, but nice running weather. Sue was running with an injured arm, so had to go slower than usual. She took pictures of the bands along the way. Brad started further back than usual and was impeded by walkers. April 24. 2010 - YMCA Riverbank Run, Missoula, MT. Brad - 10K run: 1:28:48. 1st of 3, M75-79; 441st of 505 in the race. Cloudy and cool weather. Sue was in LA visiting her sister; didn't run this year. Brad ran negative splits. April 10, 2010 - Grizzley Triathlon, Missoula, MT. 1000 yd. pool swim, 12.4 mi. bike, 3.1 mile run. Sue: S: 22:04, T1+B+T2: 1:04:26, R: 31:15, O: 1:57:35; 1st 60+ women. Brad: S: 21:08, T1+B+T2: 53:16, R: 44:04, O: 1:58:23; 1st 70+ men. Day was cold: 22 degrees F at start, abt. 30 degrees when Brad's wave started at 9 a.m., necessitated clothing for bike, so slow transition and more wind resistance. Day warmed for Sue's start at 10:30. Difference from last year's race in transitions and bike. #194 March 29-April 2 - National Masters Alpine Skiing Championships, Sun Valley, ID. Brad - 4th Super Combined, 6th SuperG, 4th giant slalom, 4th slalom, 4th overall combined. Two days of rain-snow-fog, followed by three clear days of clear weather. One SG cancelled due to weather. Three of us were competing for that third podium spot; I missed by three tenths of a second in the GS and seven tenths of a second in the SL. March 27 - Buttercup Run, Arlee, MT. 10K - Sue, 57:04, 1st 60+ women. 5K - Brad, 40:33, who knows, 60+ men. Cool day, nice run. March 21-22 - Outlaw Ski Races, Lookout Pass, MT. Brad, GS, 1st 70+, SL, 1st 70+. February 25-28 - Don Cook Memorial Ski Races, Schweitzer, ID. Brad, 2 SG, 2nd 75-79; GS, 2nd 75-79; SL, 2nd 75-79. 2009 September 13, 2009 - 2009 ITU Sprint Distance Triathlon World Championship, Southport, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run. Brad - S: 19:32, T1: 3:13, B: 42:45, T2: 2:43, R: 38:20. 1 of 3 M75-79. Wetsuits allowed. Swim was 3 sides of a triangle, not sure of current. Same transition as for Olympic Distance. Legs were tired from effort the day before. US champ was leading me on bike by about 100 yards when he turned into transition after 1 loop of a 2 loop bike course and was subsequently disqualified. Sunny, warm, but running earlier in morning rather than at noon as in race previous day. #193 September 12, 2009 - 2009 ITU Olympic Distance Triathlon World Championship, Southport, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run. Brad - S: 31:13, T1: 3:03, B: 1:23:50, T2: 2:43, R: 80:25, total 3:21:11. 3 of 7 M75-79. Wetsuits allowed. Swim started just as tide changed, and current with us most of the way. Huge transition area. Transitions added over a third of a mile to course. Flat bike and run. Finished 31 secs. ahead of an Aussie and 1:49 ahead of a Kiwi. Sunny, warm, nicely run race. #192 September 9, 2009 - 2009 ITU Aquathlon World Championship, Southport, Gold Coast, Australia. 2.5k run, 1k swim, 2.5k run. Brad - R: 16:39, S: 29:53, R: 19:04, total 1:05:34. 3 of 4 M75-79. Transitions in run times. No wetsuits. Basically, a rectangular course swimming against the tidal current on one leg of the rectangle. Nice weather, slight chop on the bay. August 22, 2009 - Bitterroot Classic Triathlon, Hamilton, MT. 750 yd. pool swim, 20K bike, 5K run. Sue - S: 17:57, B: 53:50, R: 31:18, Total: 1:43:05, 1st F60-69. Brad - S:15:23, B: 40:47, R: 37:40, Total: 1:33:50, 1st M70+. Bright, sunny day, hot, weak north breeze. Great local race, more competitive this year due to prize money. #191 August 10, 2009, National Senior Games, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA. 10 K cycle time trial. Brad: 18:49, 5th, M75-79. Hot, hilly, headwind for first half, start time 4:30 p.m. Brad's time would have won in other years and was 10 seconds out of 3rd place. Very competitive field. #190 August 9, 2009, National Senior Games, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA. 10 K race. Sue: 55:28, 5th F60-64. Very competitive field. Warm, sunny weather. Sue's time would have won in other years. Winner F60-64 finished in 41:58. August 2, 2009, 2009 National Senior Games Triathlon, Port of Redwood City, CA. 400 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:25:14, 1st 75-79. 9:32 swim, 39:52 bike, 32:57 run. Weather cool, mostly overcast, no wind. Finished 1:04 ahead of second place. Interesting race. National Senior Games were very competitive, with 10,000 athletes, all of whom had to qualify at state games to be there. #189 July 12, 2009, Missoula Half Marathon, Missoula, MT. Sue - 2:02:24, 3 of 34 F60-64, 399/1245 overall. Brad - 2:53:54, 3 of 5 M70+, 964/1245 overall. Beautiful day for the races (marathon and half marathon), which started from different points at 6:00 a.m. Very well-run race. Brad was oldest person in half marathon, finished well under estimate of 3:15. June 21, 2009, Treasure State Triathlon, Bozeman, MT. 1500 meter swim, 12.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run. Brad 3:51:04, next to last overall. Disappointing result, slower than last year by 20 min. Day started with light rain, temperature low 50's, water temp. 63 degrees, but started to clear during bike, and was sunny for run. Slightly hypothermic early on, slow transitions, cautious on wet road. Nicely run race, good course. #188 May 30, Queen City Triathlon, YMCA, Helena, MT. 1000 yd. swim, 12.4 mi. bike, 3.4 mi. run. Brad 1:50:57, 55th of 74. Swim 21:34, 39th of 74; T1 2:03, 29th of 74; bike 43:00, 36th of 72; T2 1:08, 59th of 73; run 43:12, 68th of 73. Light overcast, warm, flat courses, a lot of cheerful volunteers, a fun USAT-sanctioned triathlon aimed at first-timers. 187. May 10, YMCA Triathlon, Missoula, MT. 500 yd. swim, 5 mi. bike, 3.2 mi. run. Brad1:07:00, 69th of 79. Swim 10:07, 47th of 79; bike + T1+T2. 44th of 79, run 38:41, 74th of 79. Sunny spring day, good turn-out for the first year of this triathlon. 186. May 4, Lilac Bloomsday Race, Spokane, WA. Sue 12K, 1:05:05, 3rd, W60-64, 4289th of 45,472 finishers. Brad 12K, 1:32:51, 15,364th of 45,472 finishers. Cloudy, 50's, good running weather. Sue maintained her second seed and early start for 2010 with her time. Brad would have been 11th among the 75-79-year-olds if he'd been 10 days older. April 25, YMCA Riverbank Run, Missoula, MT. Sue, 5K, 24:25, 1st W60-64, 122 of 1222 overall; Brad, 10K, 75:38, 4 of 5, M70-74, 351 of 392 overall. Partly cloudy, 30's and 40's. April 18, Superfun(d) Run 5K, Milltown, MT. Brad: about 42 minutes. New race at the site of a Superfund Clean-up on the Clark Fork east of Missoula. April 11, Grizzly Triathlon, Missoula, MT - 1000 yd. swim 20 K bike, 5k run. Sue 2:00:28, 1st 60+ women, 24:28-1:05:35-30:46. Brad 1:54:03, 8th 60+ men, 21:10-48:46-44:07. Partly cloudy, cool 50's. Brad's running still sub-par. 185. April 4, Run for the Trees, Missoula, MT - 5K run, partly cloudy, cool. Sue: 25:27, 1st 60-69; Brad 37:29; 2nd, 70+. Brad's first run in several weeks, due to knee problems and pulled hamstring. 2008 November 27, Turkey Trot, Kim Williams Trail, Missoula, MT - 5 mile run, cold and clear - brrrrr! Brad - 58:55. Race timing had me 2 minutes faster, but I can't run that fast. October 18, Pumpkin Run, McClay Flats, Missoula, MT - 5k run next to the Bitterroot River. Brad - 35:44. September 20, Age Group National Championship, Hagg Lake, OR - 1500 meter swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run. Brad - 4:01:49, 15th of 17 70-74. Intestinal flu, hilly bike and run courses, and being the oldest male in the field made for a bad day, but I snagged a spot to the 2009 world championships. #184 September 6, Garden City Triathlon, Frenchtown, MT - 1500 m. swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run. Brad - 3:35:19, 104th of 104 overall, including teams, 1 of 1 70+. Only race of the year where I was slower this year than last. Slow 38:20 swim, 1:25:14 bike, 1:25:47 run, a long T-1 and a short T-2. Thick fog came in at the beginning of the swim, making navigation difficult. The faster athletes were 2 to 3 minutes slower in swim this year than last. I had no power on bike; not sure why. #183 August 24, River City Roots Festival, Missoula, MT - 4 mile run. Sue - 35:53, 1st F60+, 160/303 overall; Brad - 47:26, 3rd 70+; 256/303 overall, A bit stiff and sore from triathlon the day before. Great weather! Timing off -- my watch said 48:36 for my time. August 23, Bitterroot Classic Triathlon, Hamilton, MT - 750 yard pool swim, 12.8 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Sue: 1:39:01, 1st F60-64, 167th of 221 overall, including teams. Brad 1:35:13, 1st 70+, 150th of 221 overall, swim 15:07, 113th of 221, bike +T1 41:17, 65th of 221; run +T2 38:49, 205th of 221. Our heat started at 11:30, so we got to run in the heat of the day, sunny, warm 80's. A fun, family-oriented race with a kids race following. #182 August 17 - Treasure State Triathlon, Bozeman,MT - 1500 meter swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run. Brad 3:31:35, 1st and only M70+, 74th of 79 overall. Swim 37:05, bike 1:19:00, run 1:28:47, transitions 6 minutes. Record heat, 5000' altitude, long hot run made this one a challenge. #181 August 10 - Harvest Thunder Triathlon, Great Falls, MT - 500 meter swim, 12 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:40:43, 1st of 3 60+, 75th of 106 overall. Swim 13:17, 71st of 106; bike 41:16, 48th of 106; run 42:05, 91st of 106. Sunny day, no wind, very pleasant course with "snake" pool swim, one big hill in bike, and a tree-shaded run; nicely organized race with an outstanding goody bag including a bike jersey and a ditty bag. Tired from aquathlon the previous day, leading to slower times in swim and run. #180 August 9 - Aquathlon at the Pond, Frenchtown Pond State Park, MT - 1000 meter swim, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:01:45, last of 24 participants. Swim: 22:08, 20th of 24; run 37:30, 24th of 24, 2:07 minutes in transition getting wet suit off. Small but well-run local race. August 2 - Polson Bay Swim, Polson, MT - 2000 yard swim across an arm of Flathead Lake. Brad 45:56, 3 of 3 60+, 62nd of 69 overall. Fun race, wind chop, cold water, and foggy goggles made navigating a bit dicey. July 20 - Chelanman Sprint Distance Triathlon, Chelan, WA - 800 meter swim, 13.1 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:40:48, 1st of 1 70+, 1st 60+ Grand Master, 156 of 223 overall. At 74, I was the oldest person racing. Swim 15:35, 112th of 223; bike 41:32, 83rd of 221; run 38:53, 201st of 221. Another sunny, warm day. Try-a-tri race with a shorter swim in shallow water was going on concurrently with separate waves, 600 racers entered in the sprint and try-a-tri all together. Well-run race, lots of happy faces. My training appears to be going well -- no soreness racing two days in a row. #179. July 19 - Chelanman Olympic Distance Triathlon, Chelan, WA - 1500 meter swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run. Brad 3:32:27, 2nd of 2 M70-74, 203rd of 217 finishers. Swim split 37:35, 181st of 222, bike split 1:27:39, 161st of 220, run 1:23:00, 212th of 217. Warm sunny day, nice course, well-managed event concurrent with a half-max 70.3 race. Sun was tough on visibility on the swim leg back. Alan Weaver beat me fair and square, but he's just a kid of 70. #178. July 13 - Spring Meadow Triathlon, Helena, MT - 1000 yard swim, 12.8 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:52.52, 1st of 1 M70-74, 84th of 95 finishers. Great day and race, bike 6 miles uphill into the wind, but a nice ride back. Was beaten by 75-year-old Alan Jackson of Bozeman. #177. July 6 - Race the River Triathlon, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, 1/2 mile swim, 11.8 mi. bike, 3.1 mi. run. Brad 1:36:32, 1st of 2, M70-74, 234th of 303 finishers overall. Nice race, very safety-conscious, on a sunny but windy day. Swim was with a 2 knot current and took Brad 10 minutes. #176 June 12-14 - Montana Senior Games, Butte, MT. Sue: 10k, 57:45, 1st 55-59. Brad: 5k, 37:50, 3rd 70-74; 10k, 90:37, 1st 70-74; 50 yd breaststroke, 1:16, 2nd 70-74; 200 yd freestyle, 3:58, 1st 70-74; 500 yd freestyle, 1st, 70-74; 10k bike time trial, 20:31, 1st 70-74. Elevation of 5300 feet for swims and 5k and elevation of 6200 feet for time trial and 10k run slowed us a little. Good weather, cool, windy, nicely organized games. May 31 - Peaks 5K, Missoula, MT. Sue - 34:05, Brad - 35:41. Got back from Scandinavia last night, jetlagged and tired. May 4 - Bloomsday 12K Run, Spokane, WA. Sue - 67:15, 20th of 1552 F55-59, 4549 of 43640 finishers overall. Brad 88:45, 42nd of 238 M70-74, 12982 of 43640 finishers. Sunny, nice day for a run. Sue got to start with the elite wave again and preserved her status to run there again next year. April 25 - Riverbank Run, Missoula, MT. Sue - 5K run, 24:43, 1st F55-59; Brad - 10K run, 74:29, 2nd M70-74. Sunny, nippy, first day it didn't snow in a week, thousands of participants in Missoula's biggest run of the year. April 12 - Grizzly Triathlon, Missoula, MT -- 1000 yard pool swim, 12.4 mi. bike, 3.1 mi. run. Sue: 1:52:24, 3rd, F55-59. Brad: 1:49:03, 3rd M60+, about 300th of 352 overall, including teams. Of the 352, Brad was 249th among the swimmers, 169th among the bikers, and 325th among the runners, oldest geezer in the race by 10+ years. First warm, sunny spring day this year. #175 April 5 - Run for the Trees, Missoula, MT -- 5K run. Sue 24:40, 6th 50-59. Brad 37:27, 3rd 70+. March 29 - Sand Hollow Dual in the Desert Sprint Duathlon, St. George, Utah -- 2.5K run, 10 mi. bike, 2.5K run. Brad 1:21:32, 1st 70-74, 41st of 50 finishers. 10k run - Sue 59:01, 1st overall. September 8 - Palouse Sprint Triathlon, Moscow, ID - 500 yard swim, 9.3 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:26:15, 76th of 101 individual finishers, 1st of 2 70+. Beautiful, sunny day, no wind, really fine race course. Sue did a 10k in Missoula, finishing in 52:46. #174 September 1 - Garden City Triathlon, Frenchtown Pond State Park, MT - 1500 meter swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run, elevation 3,000 feet. Brad 3:27:40, lst (and only) 70+, 101st of 103 finishers. A cool, foggy morning greeted us; it stayed cool for the whole race. Nice courses for each event, two loops for the swim and the bike, out and back for the run. #173. August 25 - Bitterroot Classic Triathlon, Hamilton, MT - 750 yard pool swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Sue - 1:41:06, 131st of 183 finishers. Brad - 1:47:35, 156th of 183 finishers, 202 entrants including teams. Interesting local triathlon with 17 swim heats, 12 at a time. Since we were in later heats, we got to bike and run in the heat of the day (90's). Best shirt of any race, a bike shirt. #172. July 21 - Chelanman Sprint Triathlon, Chelan, WA - half mile+ swim, 13 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. Brad 1:44:22, 1st (and only) 70+, 153rd of 180 finishers overall. Great multisport weekend in Chelan, with several triathlons, kids' events, and runs going on. Testing out swim technique. Beautiful day, over 3000 runners for the 10k, 5k, and 1 mile races. April 14 - Grizzly Triathlon, Missoula. 1000 yard swim in Univ. of Montana pool, 4 to a lane, with heats starting every half hour, 20k bike through Hellgate Canyon, 5k run with a hill thrown in on Kim Williams trail, Montana's largest triathlon with 364 entrants. Nice run on a sunny, windy, cold day. March 10-16 - USSA Masters National Championship at Big Sky, Montana. Brad 9th in Super G, 7th in giant slalom, 7th in slalom, and 7th in combined in Class 10, Men 70-74. There's no way I can catch the best in my age class, but had a good and fun competition among those at my level. January-February - Northern Division alpine ski racing at Snowbowl, Blacktail, and Lookout. August 5 - Polson Bay's Water Daze 1.2 mi. swim, Polson, MT. Brad - 1:22, 1st 60+. A point-to-point course in Flathead Lake. It felt as if I was swimming uphill all the way. August 5 - Mission Mountain Classic 5K, Ronan, MT. Sue - 25:50, 1st, 50-59 women; Brad 34:09, 1st 70-79 men. Relatively flat course in the Mission Valley. Heavy haze due to forest fires in Washington. July 29 - Aquathlon at the Pond, Frenchtown Pond State Park, MT. Swim 500m, Run 2.5K. There were only 3 slower than I was. March - World Masters Alpine Ski Championship, Sun Valley, Idaho - Brad (find results) March - Brad won the Rocky Mountain Masters alpine ski championship for the season in the 70-74 age group in slalom and giant slalom. February - Cardiologist recommended that Brad take three actions to reduce his blood pressure as low as possible: (1) move to lower elevation from Copper's 10,000 feet; (2) get regular aerobic exercise; (3) take Toprol-xl. Brad quickly found that Toprol-xl limited his maximum heart rate to about 100 beats per minute and thereby served as a governor on his running/biking/x-c skiing engine. Noosa Triathlon is world's second largest triathlon, with a field of almost 10,000, including teams. It rained, heavy at times, first time in 22 years of Noosa triathlons. This was a very well-run race culminating Noosa Multi-Sport Week We had a good time during the week, racing, watching races, acclimatizing to sea level, and taking surf boarding lessons. #166 November 5 - 5K fun run, Noosa, Queensland, Australia. Sue - 27 minutes, Brad - 31 minutes. Run into Noosa National Park, then back out to Noosa Pt. and back along beach. November 5 - Eyeline 1000 meter Ocean Swim. Sue - DNF, Brad, 7/7, M70+, 29:47. A thunderstorm moved in as we were swimming. Sue and most of the field were sent back to the beach when lightning starting hitting nearby. Brad was in an early wave and finished. It got very dark, 2 meter ocean swells with whitecaps kicked up by strong wind, thick sea weed near shore, pelting rain, difficult to see turn buoys, a real "why am I doing this?" race!. Fantastic weather, well-run races, very competitive, particularly in Brad's age group. September 18 - USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship, Shreveport, LA. 1575 meter swim, 40K bike, 10K run. Sue 3:18:13, 15/16 F55-59; Brad - 3:27:17, 6/9 70-74. Brad's race a disaster, swim a minute a hundred yards slower than at elevation, run one and one half minutes slower per mile than he ran a week earlier at 10,000' elevation. Brad was faster at the Boulder Peak Triathlon, a slightly longer, hillier, harder race at a mile above sea level. A race at my training elevation -- 10,000 feet above sea level. August 29 - Rattlesnake Triathlon, Aurora, CO. 500 meter swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.2 mile run. Sue: 1:31.32, 1/7 F 55-59, 84/175 women. Brad: 1:29:36, 1/3 M 70-74, 142/181 men. Great race in the hills east of Denver. Outstanding race, national club championship, fantastic expo, awards 5 deep, pro's racing too, a true celebration of multisport. Bike course included 1400' climb to the top of Old Stage Hill. Brad improved time over last year by 27 minutes; Sue by 2 minutes. #162 August 1 - Evergreen Town Race, Evergreen, CO. 5K running race. Sue - 24:08, 2nd F50-59, 36/251 women; Brad - 28:59, 2nd M70+, 194/289 men. A very well-run race with a slightly downhill course at 7,000'. July 29 - Stroke and Stride Series, Boulder, CO. 1500 meter swim and 5K run aquathlon at the Boulder reservoir. Sue - !:13:43, 134/143 overall. Brad 1:16:02, 136/143 overall. Interesting and fun race, with a few odd twists, like the run turnaround not being marked and people turning around kinda' when they felt like it. Brad, being sure he'd come to an orange cone and never did, ran a few extra minutes, but, what the heck, it was a good workout. July 25 - Wray Wroad Wrace, Wray, CO, Wray to Haigler, NE, and back, 34 miles at 3300'. Sue: 1:53:00, overall women's winner. Brad: 1:41:31, 1st 70+, 11th of 17 overall. Very nice local bike road race. Sue won the huge travelling trophy as the women's winner of the long race (short race of 14 miles the same day). Brad won 70+ by 3 seconds after being a mile behind another 70-year-old at the 17 mile turnaround and catching him on the last rise coming back into Wray, demonstrating that the competitive spirit doesn't diminish with age (even if common sense does). July 22: Great Adventure Sports Time Trial #3, Frisco to Copper up Ten Mile Canyon, 5.5 miles, 600' elevation gain from 9100' to 9700'. Sue: 24:27, 3/3 F50+, 65/69 overall. This time I took the lead for more than half the race and pushed the pace, maybe not smart race strategy for me personally, but gave us all in the 65+ age groups better overall times. New, longer course this year, brutal hilly run, 80 and 90 degree heat, Brad 2nd oldest in race at 69, got beat by a young 65-year-old whippersnapper. May 25 - Annual Women's Run, Helsinki, Finland. Sue - 51 minutes, probably among the first 200 of the 14,000 women participating in downtown Helsinki. March 28-29 - NASTAR National Championship, Park City, Utah - Brad - 4th, Expert Division 65-69. Also 10th in the national rankings, expert 65-69. Sue - 8th, Recreational Division 50-54, 10th in the national rankings, recreational 50-54. July 28th - Xterra Triathlon, XT version, Keystone, CO - Brad - 3:02:22 - A cold 500+ meter swim, horrendous single track mountain bike from 9,300 to 10,900 ft. elevation at Packsaddle summit, 5+ kilometer trail run. Tough race. Beautiful day. Brad oldest finisher by 17+ years, 1st 60+, 215th out of 238 finishers beating 2 relay teams. Where have all the geezers gone?! July 24th - Great Adventure Sport Time Trial - 5.8 miles. Sue - 17:46, 1st 50+, ; Brad 16:06, 2nd 60+, . Beautiful evening! July 10th - Great Adventure Sport Time Trial - 5.8 miles. Sue 43 minutes, 2nd, 50-54, Citizens Division; Brad 46 minutes, 1st, 65-69, Citizens Division. Slow, slow run and swim in the rain. July 8th - Saturn Sprint Triathlon, Monument, CO. 600 meter swim, very hilly 15 mile bike, 5 K run at 7,000+ feet. Sue 7th 50-54 women, 471/566 overall. Brad 2nd 65-69 men, 408/566 overall. John Sturtevant passed me in the run again! July 4th - Firecracker 5K, Leadville. 5K run up and down from an elevation of 10,152 (no level). Sue 1st 50-59 women in 27.22, 50th of 78 overall; Brad ? 60-69 men in 30:53, 64th of 78 overall. Great weather, but tough running hills at altitude. June 30th - Silverthorne Duathlon, 5 K run, 10 K bike at 9000' elevation. Brad 1st (and only) male 50+, 14th of 34 overall; Sue 2nd female 50+, 16th of 34 overall. Beautiful weather, nice local race, more women than men. June 24th - Cheyenne Mountain Sprint Triathlon, 750 m. swim, 20K bike, 5K run. Sue 4th, 50-54, 1:48:08, 193/243 women. Brad 2nd, 65-69, 1:42:05, 271/309 men. Large number of drop-outs. Good weather, but hot. Nice race! June 9th - Hyannis Sprint Triathlon, 400 m. swim, 10 mi. bike, 3.5 mi. run. June 2nd - Lake Placid World Qualifier, 500 m. swim, 40K bike, 10K run (course shortened due to cold water and threat of cold rain). Sue 8th, 50-54. Brad 4th, 65-69. May 27th - Saturn Sprint Duathlon, 5K run - 20K bike - 5K run. Sue 4th, 50-54. Brad 1st, 60+. May 12 - Barking Dog Duathlon, 5K run - 30K bike - 5 K run. Sue 3rd 50-54, 226 of 268 finishers (300 entrants, but 36 flatted out) overall, in 2:08:38; Brad 1st 65-69, 207 of 268 overall, in 2:03:22. Biked fast, but ran slow! January to April - Alpine Ski Racing - Lots of GS's and slaloms, Copper Business League, Keystone Business League, Rocky Mountain Masters. 8th of 18, 65-69, at Nastar National Championships. 2nd, 65-69, in GS at Summit Senior Games (1st, 65-69, in speedskating). Senior Games in St. George, Utah: Heaven for the aging multisport athlete! September 10 - Los Angeles Triathlon - sunny, low 70's, great course with the swim at Venice Beach, wide closed-off bike course thru Hollywood to downtown LA, hilly run up around Dodger Stadium and back downtown. Sue 3:26:10, 3rd 50-54, 823 of 876 overall; Brad 2:50:10, 2nd 65-69, 585 of 876 overall. Tight duel with Dave Ballentyne throughout the race, trading leads back and forth five or six times, with Dave pulling away in the last mile to win by 19 seconds. August 27th - Tim Kerr 10K - Avalon, NJ - sea level, warm, humid. Sue 52:54, 2nd 50-54, 488/1043 overall; Brad 54:15, 2nd 65-69, 543/1043 overall. August 19th - Ed Snell Memorial 10K - from Fairplay at 9,980 ft. to Alma at 10, 572 ft., uphill into a stiff headwind. Sue 65:45, 2nd, 51-60, Brad 66:15, 3rd, 61-70. August 13th - Leadville Trail 10K - 3 miles down starting at 10,142 ft., .2 flat, 3 miles up. Sue 64:38, 61st of 88, 1st 50-59; Brad 62:54, 56th of 88, 5th of 9 60+. Lot of mountain runners prepping for the Leadville 100 and the Pikes Peak Marathon next weekend. Overall winner a woman in 42:38; overall male winner Bob Leonard, 56, in 43:16. Day after Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race. July 30th - Boulder Peak Triathlon - S 1.5K, B 42K, R 10K - Brad 3:17:17 - 747th of 896, 3rd of 5 65-69. Intense sun and 1000' of climbing on the bike make this a challenging race. But it was nice to be racing down at 5400 feet above sea level. July 29th - Miles for Miracles 5K trail run, Breckenridge (1.5 mi. and 640 vertical feet up Peak 9, 1.5 mi. down). Brad 35:03, 2nd 60+, 59 of 90 overall, Sue 35:56, 1st 50-59 69 of 90 overall. July 23rd - Xterra Triathlon - Swim 1K (in 54 degree water) - mountain bike 26K (up and down Keystone Mountain on single track from 9,300' to an elevation of 11,640'), run 11K on a trail. Arrived at bike-run transition 5 minutes after the cut-off time, so did the run without aid stations and finished unofficially 212th of 252 entrants, last, 1st of 2 60+ entrants, in 5:16:35. This is one very tough race! July 22nd - Xterra 11K - trail run. Sue finished 32nd of 40, 2nd 50-59, in 1:06. July 8th - National Duathlon Championship, Sartell, Minnesota. Run 10k - bike 42k - run 5k. Weather hot and muggy (93% humidity, temp. in the 80's at race start). Sue - 3:11:53 - 6th 50-54, 312 of 353 overall; Brad - 2:53:54 - 4th 65-69; 280 of 353 overall. July 4th - Firecracker 5K, Leadville, CO - Sue - 27:00 1st 50-59, 31st of 55 overall; Brad - 28:38 2nd 60+, 38th of 55 overall. Running the hills at Leadville's 10,152 ft. above sea level. July 1st - Cabbage Head Duathlon (5K-30K-5K), Wiggins, CO - Brad - 1:54:45 - 82nd of 106 overall, 1st 60+. June 25th - Albuquerque Women's Distance Festival 5K - Sue 24:30, Alma 24:23. Great race along Rio Grande. June 18th - Cheyenne Mountain Triathlon, Colorado Springs - sunny, cool (water temp. 61 degrees) - Brad, 1:33:39, 3rd 60+, 230/394 overall; Sue, 1:49.14, 4th 50-54, 332/394 overall. Brad nursing pulled calf muscle from 10k the day before and assorted bruises from mountain bike race. June 17th - Run the Rockies 10k, from Copper Mountain at 9,700 ft. above sea level down Ten Mile Canyon to Frisco at 9,100 ft. - sunny, cool (snow in the early a.m.) - Sue 52.41, 71/179 overall, 2nd of 8 50-59, Brad, 57:42, 97/179 overall, 2nd of 8 60+. More women than men in this race! June 13th - Summit Mountain Challenge Series Frisco Roundup Mountain Bike Race - 200 racers over a steep, hilly, very rocky, expert cross-country ski trail and single track - Brad 42nd of 44 in the men's novice class (all ages, but all a lot younger than Brad)- 9 miles in 1:32:17 Slow! Fell 4 times -- ouch! June 2nd - Turquoise Lake 20 K Road and Trail Run - beautiful day, tough course around the lake with 800 ft. of elevation gain at altitudes varying between 9870' and 10,200' above sea level - Brad 247th of 285, 2nd 65-69, in 2:23:37. Slow! May 29th - Bolder Boulder 10 K - 40,524 finishers on a record hot day in Boulder - nice course with slight ups and downs finishing in the University of Colorado Stadium - Brad 5th of 40 men age 66 in 56:46, 9,325th of 40,524 finishers overall. May 22nd - Denver Academy 5 K - Sue 5th among women, 23rd of 115 overall in 26:29; Brad 20th among men, 25th of 115 overall in 27:06. April 30th - ITU Triathlon World Championship (Swim 1500 meters, Bike 40 kilometers, Run 10 kilometers), Perth, Western Australia. Brad 14th of 24 in age group 65-69 in a time of 2:57:18. Sue ran a 5 k in Perth the day before, winning the 50-59 age group in 24:29. April 8 - 9th - NASTAR National Championship (alpine skiing), Beaver Creek, CO. Handicaps earned racing Nastar ranged from 15 to 42 (40 required for gold). Learned I qualified for national championships just a week before the race. Brad 4th 65-69 with a handicap of 33.5. March 25th - Hula Moon Snowshoe Classic - 5 km.

Fantastic luau party after race! February 7 - 8th: Summit Senior Games: The 1999 season found us both in new age groups. We competed in the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Montreal in September, the National Triathlon Championship in St. Joseph, MO, at the end of September, and Brad competed in the World Duathlon Championship in Huntersville, North Carolina, in mid-October. Brad qualified for the 2000 ITU World Triathlon Championship in Perth, Western Australia, in April 2000. Brad has now done 140 triathlons, while Sue is up over 110. October 16th - ITU World Duathlon Championship (run 10K-bike 40K-run 5K), Huntersville, NC. Cool, clear, some wind. Brad 11th, M65-69, in 2:48:06. October 10th - Run on the Wild Side 10K at the zoo in Denver. Cool, clear. Sue 2nd, F50-54, in 51:21; Brad 1st, M65-69, in 55:16. September 25th - USAT National Triathlon Championship in St. Joseph, MO. Cool, clear, some wind. Sue 16th in F50-54 in 3:17:52; Brad 9th in M65-69 in 3:03:09. September 11th - ITU World Triathlon Championships in Montreal. Cool, clear, very windy. Sue 26th in F50-54 in 2:57; Brad 11th in M65-69 in 2:49:50. August 29th - Tim Kerr 10K, New Jersey, sultry. August 21st - Ed Snell Memorial Run/10,000 Meters at 10,000 Feet, from Alma to Fairplay, Colorado, cool and partly cloudy at 2 miles above sea level. Sue 1st in F51-60 in 54:48; Brad 2nd in M61+ in 56:18. August 1st - Wild Dog Triathlon, North Kingston, R.I., again sunny, hot, and very humid, 650 yard swim, 10 mile bike, 5K run. Sue finished first, F50-54, and 150th of 241 overall in 1:11:49; Brad first, 65-69, 138th of 241, in 1:10:31. The last of our eastern races before moving to Colorado in early August. July 23, Blessing of the Fleet 10 miler, Narragansett, R.I. Sue finished in 86 minutes, Brad in 87, on a hot, humid Friday evening. July 4th - Fourth of July 8 K, DCRR, Alexandria, sunny, hot, and humid. Sue finished in 43:08, 51st of 110; Brad in 43:26, 52nd of 110. June 26th - National Duathlon Championship, Marlboro, MA.
